Why it matters
Dryer exhaust is enforceable code, not a suggestion
The International Residential Code (IRC) governs one- and two-family home construction across the country, and dryer exhaust venting falls under Section M1502. Both the City of Bryan (2021 edition) and the City of College Station (2024 edition) have adopted the IRC as local law, and M1502 is substantively the same in both.
That means these aren't best practices or recommendations. A dryer vent system that doesn't meet M1502 is a code violation: it can fail inspection, and it creates liability for the builder if a fire, moisture, or performance issue results.
Getting the vent right during the build costs a fraction of what your buyers would pay to fix it after move-in, and it's one less callback on your schedule.
What we see in the field
Issues we find in over 90% of the homes we visit
Through our residential cleaning and inspection work across the Brazos Valley, we keep finding the same documented violations of IRC M1502 in new construction, plus a few practices that pass code but still cause problems.
Runs over the 35-foot maximum
Code violation: M1502.4.5. The IRC limits dryer exhaust ducts to 35 feet of total equivalent length, with each 90° elbow deducting 5 feet and each 45° deducting 2.5 feet. A 25-foot run with two 90° elbows is already at the limit. Overlong runs mean extended dry times, heavy lint accumulation, and failed inspections.
Duct thinner than 28 gauge
Code violation: M1502.4.2. The code requires smooth-walled metal duct at least 0.0157 inches thick (28 gauge). We routinely find 30-gauge pipe in new builds. Thinner pipe dents easily during construction, crimps airflow, and doesn't meet the minimum.
Flex duct in the exhaust run
Code violation: M1502.4.2. The entire run must be smooth-walled rigid metal duct. Flexible or semi-rigid duct isn't permitted anywhere in the system: not through walls or ceilings, and not as a shortcut around turns. The only exception is the short transition duct at the dryer connection itself. Anything beyond that creates lint traps and fire hazards.
Screws penetrating the duct
Code violation: M1502.4.4. Sheet metal screws driven through duct walls protrude into the airflow path and catch lint at every joint. The IRC prohibits fasteners that extend into the duct interior. Joints must be sealed with approved foil tape or mastic only.
Restrictive termination vents
Code violation: M1502.3. The exhaust must terminate in a full-opening hood that maintains at least 12.5 square inches of free area. Many builder-grade caps with small openings, restrictive louvers, or screen mesh don't meet this requirement.
Mesh left on roof termination vents
Code violation: M1502.3. Many roof vents ship with a mesh screen meant to keep pests out during construction. If that screen isn't removed before the system goes into use, lint collects on the mesh and quickly blocks the exhaust opening entirely. Zero airflow out of the vent overheats the dryer, packs lint through the whole duct run, and creates a serious fire hazard. The IRC requires a full-opening exhaust hood, and a mesh-blocked vent doesn't meet that requirement.
Wrong tape at duct joints
Code violation: M1502.4.4. Duct joints must be sealed with tape listed and labeled in accordance with UL 181B. Cloth-backed duct tape, general HVAC tape, and other non-rigid tapes don't meet that standard. Despite the name, duct tape isn't rated for dryer exhaust: the heat and humidity degrade it until it loses adhesion and falls off, leaving joints unsealed. Escaping lint then collects in wall and ceiling cavities and becomes a concealed fire hazard. Only UL 181B listed foil tape belongs at these joints.
Legal on paper, costly in practice
Not violations, still problems. Rectangular or oval transition duct crammed into 2x4 wall cavities restricts airflow, collects lint in its corners, and is much harder to clean. And cheap termination caps can pass code while letting pests in, sealing poorly in wind, and degrading fast in Texas weather.

22-gauge aluminized steel boxes installed during framing let the dryer sit flush to the wall, protect the exhaust hose from being crushed, and reduce fire hazard inside the wall cavity. Fits standard and pedestal dryers.
Two-Phase Installation
We rough-in the duct run during framing, then return after the wall or roof exterior is complete to finish the termination. Your build schedule keeps moving, and every exit point is properly weatherproofed.
